Why does gateway arts believe in speech and drama?

Not only is Drama fun but the skills we learn through intensive drama training are very much life skills. These can be applied at school and later in life at work. This includes skills in critical thinking, lateral thinking and problem-solving. Drama helps to understand one’s emotional state, as well as empathizing with other people’s feelings. These “soft skills” along with strategic thinking in impromptu situations prepare your little one for life’s many challenges.

Drama enrichment teaches interpersonal skills.

Drama builds self-confidence in public speaking. Not everyone will have to talk to a large hall full of people, however it is not uncommon to have to talk to peers and friends in a small- or medium-sized groups. Drama teaches one how to talk to different people and groups, big or small, for different purposes. Through role play, you gain confidence in speaking-up and articulating your thoughts.

What is Critical Thinking? And why is it important?

Critical thinking is the way we approach a subject or a problem. When one analyses a topic “critically” it means they are unbiased/unprejudiced about the information received and therefore aim to make decisions that are rational and empathetic. Critical thinking cannot be ego-driven but rather observed with humility. Children asking “why?” this or “why?” that is healthy. Their intrinsic curiosity expands their knowledge and promotes “interests”. We want to encourage children to ask questions and think about what they hear. We want them to appreciate that everyone will see a problem differently and that is good. We hope they will learn to have open-minds and hearts.

Drama builds leaders.
Every child will have an opportunity to try the various exercises. Some children may be better at certain activities than others. This is natural. We encourage individuality. There will be enough variation in the activities to know whether your child is better at leading the group, or coming up with ideas, or building things like props and set, or simply excelling at following the instructions. Each of these strengths play an important part in the bigger scheme of a production. The trainers will keep a close eye on every child to judge where their skills lie, and subsequently guide them to grow.

Drama gives license to imagination and creativity.
Increasingly, young people want to stay in touch with their creative sides. Creativity is a quality desired across a diverse range of industries and companies, with a greater demand for innovation and problem solving. Individuals who have more to offer than great academic results are more sought after. More and more young people are also looking towards Performing Arts and Visual Arts as a career path. The arts, entertainment and media industry is booming, it has become a young people’s arena.

At Gateway Arts, we want to guide these young talents towards their ambitions and provide resources that will enable their growth in a positive way. Drama nurtures the imagination in children and offers them an outlet for their creative expression.
