Gateway believes that everyone should have opportunity to enjoy and engage in the arts, and that the arts enrich our lives.
For people past the age of 18 in the special education system, there is a glaring gap and lack of opportunities beyond graduation. There are limited places for continued training and especially, enrichment for these people. To help further the learning and development of this community, and hopefully add to the further quality and fullness of their lives, Gateway partnered with Act 3 Theatrics in 2018 to run a pilot 10-session drama program for adults with intellectual disabilities.
The pilot was a hugely successful, with participants demonstrating marked improvements in confidence, communication, and spatial awareness. With the success of the pilot, Gateway and Act 3 Theatrics officially launched the iDrama programme in 2019 with weekly classes for the partic. The participants engage in drama techniques such as movement, music, games and role playing to help develop communication skills beyond their daily needs, such as articulation, understanding body language, interpersonal skills and self-confidence. We firmly believe in the programme’s potential to help participants' personal development greatly, with a long-term view towards employability and integration in society.
